# Back Up and Restore Your Device

A device backup securely stores your personal key shares, which are essential
for accessing your organizations. If you switch devices, or lose your device,
the backup allows you to restore your access without needing the assistance of
an admin. Backup ensures that your data is safe and that you can quickly regain
control of your account.

The backup is stored encrypted on Fordefi’s servers, and the decryption key is
either stored in the user’s Cloud drive (iCloud/GDrive) or by the user directly
in the form of a mnemonic phrase. - **Cloud Backup**: iCloud (iOS) and Google
Drive (Android & iOS). -
**[Mnemonic phrase](https://www.cointracker.io/learn/mnemonic-phrase)**: a
12-word mnemonic phrase (similar to the one we use for org-wide disaster
recovery backup). The goal of this option is to provide a fallback for users
with no connected cloud account.

Self-serve backup and restore
- You are limited to having one type of backup at a time (meaning, cloud storage
or mnemonic phrase) *across all of your organization*, preserving consistency
and reducing confusion in recovery scenarios.
- Multi-org: different organizations can be backed up at different times and
even on different devices, but once you back up one of your organizations, you
must use the exact same backup method when backing up additional
organizations.
